Cybersecurity Awareness Month raises awareness about digital security and empowering everyone to protect their personal data from digital crime. Let’s get back to basics on protecting your data online!

Use Strong Passwords and a Password Manager. Creating, storing, and remembering passwords can be a pain for all of us, but these are your first line of defense against cybercriminals and data breaches. Remember these tips when creating passwords:
• Every password should be at least 12 characters long.
• Never reuse passwords. Each account needs a unique password.
• Password should be complex with a combo of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and characters.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication. Multi-factor authentication is sometimes called two-factor authentication or two-step verification. It is a cybersecurity measure that requires anyone logging in to prove their identity in multiple ways (i.e. responding to a text message, receiving a code, etc.). This makes it extremely hard for hackers to access your online accounts, even if they know your password.

Update Your Software Often. Software and app developers focus on keeping their users and products secure. To improve security, software companies release regular updates. If you install the latest updates for devices, software, and apps – not only are you getting the best security available, but you also ensure that you get access to the latest features and upgrades.

Recognize and Report Phishing. Phishing happens when criminals use fake emails, social media posts, or direct  messages to lure you to click on a bad link (to steal your info) or download a malicious attachment (to harm your device). If the phishing email came to your work address, report it to your IT manager immediately. If the email came to your personal email address, don’t click on links (even unsubscribe). Just delete it.
